The Music Of The Spheres

In the course of conversation with our scholarly guests yesterday, a heated debate sprang from the assertion that the only music heard in the heavens is that of the angelic choirs forever singing the praises of God most high.
The aforementioned student of Juvenal insisted that the planets above us each cause their own crystalline spheres to ring with a unique tone, which, had we the ears to hear them, would make the ultimate sublime harmony.
When one of his fellow-students challenged him to support his conceit he embarked upon a lengthy discourse, expounding on the relationship between the theory of number which he called “Mathematic” and the practice of number, which we all recognized in the form of music, made all the more vivid in our minds when he took down the gittern from the wall and demonstrated by playing certain notes.
